January 25th, 2010

Emigrating is an exciting prospect: starting a fresh and new life abroad, possibly in nicer surroundings and weather than we experience here. Many people will be excited about their move and not fully understand all the arrangements that need to be made, moving to a new country to live there requires a lot of paperwork but after you have filled out his paperwork you still have plenty of other arrangements to sort before you can move.

The most obvious point is making sure your passport has at least two years left and that you have all important documents such as birth, adoption or marriage certificates. If you are leaving to start a new job at your destination then you will need employment references and any supporting documents like a letter of acceptance.

Equally as important is ensuring all the agencies and other companies know of your new address such as banks, inland revenue, DVLA and any other government institution that needs to know your details. You should make arrangements for post to be forwarded to you whether this is by telling them of your new address or getting a friend to act as a go between.

Many homes will have pets that you will want to make the trip with you; you will need to make sure that you book inoculations and shipment plans, some pets require a period of quarantine when entering a new country so you should be prepared for them to take a little while to be reunited with you.

The last few days before you leave can be a time where lots of arrangements need to be made such as cancelling car insurance, selling vehicles you are not going to take with you can be required. Although, some companies are able to allow you to ship your own car over to your destination in a shipping crate, whilst it may take some time travelling by sea freight you can have your car or motorbike at your new home without having to buy a new one which may be a different type such as left hand drive.

Shipping can be done via the air or sea for other items such as personal items that you cannot bring with you as hand luggage or included in your baggage allowance. Your baggage allowance even for emigrating can be restrictive and considering you will likely have many personal possessions that you want to take with you it is best looking into the options that are available.

When emigrating make sure you take everything you want with you,
