Waikato Stadium is located in Hamilton, New Zealand. The stadium is used primarily for soccer and rugby football sporting events. The stadium can hold altogether about 25, 800 people, this takes into account both standing and seated spectators. The Waikato Stadium is the home venue for the Waikato team during the Air New Zealand Cup. In addition the stadium is also the home venue for the Chiefs during the Southern Hemisphere Super 14 competition. The construction work on building the stadium began in the year 2000 and was completed somewhere in the latter part of 2001. The ground was opened on the 1st of March 2002, when the inaugural match was played at the ground during the Super 12 tournament, the match was played off between the Crusaders and the Chiefs. The stadium is owned by the Hamilton City Council, while the tenants of the ground are the Chiefs and the Waikato Rugby Union.
